WAYSIDE,
St. Andrews
When you step through the front door of
Wayside, you enter a two-story great hall lined
with wood paneling, stained glass and
dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows. Delicate
hearts and fleurs-de-lis are subtly stippled
into the walls. A wood balcony is inlaid with
decorative carving. A green-tiled fireplace with
a copper hood creates a charming corner for
conversation and relaxation.
Rich in handcrafted detail, the house was
built during the Arts and Crafts movement in
1902. It was designed by premier Scottish
architect Sir Robert Lorimer and is listed as a
historic landmark.
Located within easy walking distance of
the center of St. Andrews, Wayside is
permeated with history and antiques. The
hand-wrought hardware, handmade tiles,
wood carving and stained glass were all
commissioned especially for this house.
The grounds are private and quiet. Just
outside the great hall, a sun loggia and
fieldstone dining terrace are edged with
climbing roses, perennial herbs and flowers.
A beautiful rose arbor arches over a stone
walk, inviting you to enjoy the garden. Beyond
the rose arbor and lawn is a short, private
woods walk.
You can still spot some of the original
garden, attributed to the famous garden
designer Gertrude Jekyll. Plantings include
holly bushes, blackberries, peonies,
Japanese anemone, lavatera, and some very
large and unusual specimen trees -- including
a monkey puzzle tree popular with the
Victorians.
Wayside provides a very comfortable base
from which to explore the unique history and
beauty of St. Andrews and the region of Fife.
