GATE LODGE, The Highlands
Location: Kinlochlaggan, near Newtonmore, Inverness-shire

Gate Lodge Photos

For sheer beauty and majesty, the Strathspey area is unbeatable, with the River Spey, Scotland's second longest river, rushing through the magnificent Cairngorm and Monadhliath mountains. On the eastern end of Loch Laggan, not far from the Spey, Gate Lodge guards the main entrance of the 37,000-acre Ardverikie Estate.

The lodge is one of five former estate houses that are widely scattered across the privately owned estate. All five houses remain integrated into the life of the estate, whose enterprises include forestry, sheep farming and deer.

Originally a gatehouse, Gate Lodge is a picturesque Victorian home made of hand-hewn stone and white wood trim. A three-story turret with a proper pointed roof com-pletes the image of old-world Scottish charm.

The house sleeps three comfortably, with living space on three floors. The living room has a fireplace. The eat-in kitchen is also graced with a fireplace and plenty of counter space. A small outdoor eating area just off the kitchen commands lovely views up and down the River Pattack. Guests have unlimited access to a large private beach on Loch Laggan with sand dunes and breathtaking views of the mountains.

The area around Gate Lodge is rich in landscape and wildlife, steeped in history, and full of nearby sporting and outdoor opportunities.
