The old town of AVIGNON rests imposingly on the route between Spain and Italy where the Rhone River approaches the Mediterranean Sea, and the regions of Provence and the Languedoc meet. Southern France at its most beautiful. Thousands of years of history, steeped in religion and politics; overflowing with architectural masterpieces; classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Behind its walls and ramparts, through war and weather-worn arched entrances, Avignon offers today’s visitors the opportunity to explore a plethora of winding, cobbled streets, towering architectural masterpieces, museums and theatres, restaurants and cafes, galleries and markets.

World renown in modern times for being the theatre capital of France with the Avignon Arts Festival into its 60th year this summer and the Avignon Film Festival celebrating its 24th year.

The surrounding countryside offers the undulating hills of Provence where Marcel Pagnol and Fredric Mistral lived and drew inspiration. The beautiful, perched medieval villages, the acres and acres of vines and olive groves, fruit orchards and lavender fields, all contribute to tantalising the senses in every respect. Close by the colourful Cote d’Azur with its hill towns and coastal resorts is enticing and intriguing.

The Apartment:

Situated in a quiet residential quarter within old town Avignon, within 100 meters of the nearest bakery, café, restaurant, book store and en route to all that Avignon offers…. there are just two apartments in the building. Extremely easy to locate and with the rare luxury, in Avignon, of a private garage with its electric door…..your holiday in Avignon begins calmly. Off the garage there is a fully equipped laundry with washing machine, clothes-dryer, hand basin, w.c. and oodles of storage for shopping should you happen to be trawling the antique markets and shops!

When you enter the first floor apartment you will find its high ceilings, light and spaciousness a warm welcome. With windows on three sides of the apartment, bedrooms, kitchen, dining, and lounge ...all have sunlight pouring in.

The entire apartment has been restored during the early months of 2007.

Bedroom #1 has a king sized bed (180cm) or two single beds (each 90cm), armoire, writing table and armchair. Its ensuite bathroom houses w.c., hand basin and bath with shower.

Bedroom #2 has a queen sized bed (160cm) and a large walk-in dressing room. Its bathroom is separate and houses w.c., hand basin and shower.

The kitchen is large…an ‘eat-in’ kitchen. Fully equipped with electric oven, gas cook-top, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave oven, coffee maker, toaster, kettle and….all you would need to create gourmet delights having shopped for fresh produce at “Les Halles” or one of the street markets. A dining table and chairs are there should you feel inclined or…..

From the kitchen you access the terrace where you can idle away the hours with a good book, sip an evening aperitive or bbq yourselves a tasty morsel….table and chairs again, should you feel inclined….

At one end the lounge/dining room there is an old iron and tiled fireplace, tv/video/dvd, sofas and armchairs, coffee table and bulging bookcases. At the other end there is a slightly more formal dining area….should you feel inclined…. Given that Avignon has so many fabulous restaurants you might just have to have breakfast at different table each morning…should you feel inclined!!

The apartment has central heating, cable TV and internet access.

Access:

The nearest smaller Airport is Avignon south where some of the smaller, boutique airlines come and go. The nearest large airport is Marseille/Marignane (45 minutes drive) utilised by the larger, international airlines…as well as Ryanair and similar low-cost airlines.. Nimes airport (40 minutes drive) is again used by a couple of the smaller airlines.

The TGV fast train from Paris (2 ½ hours) arrives at the special Avignon TGV station 10 minutes out of town. There is a “navette” bus which runs every 15 minutes and brings you into town. You could also take a taxi or many of the large car rental companies are represented at the TGV station. If hiring a car here do reserve in advance.

Local trains arrive and depart from the old train station just outside the old town walls.

Tours and Sites/sights:

There is a very friendly staff at the tourist office in the town. English is spoken, brochures abound and many, many tours are on offer. English speaking guides are available also.

There are half or full day bus tours further afield from Avignon. There are barge trips on the Rhone river (don’t forget Avignon is situated right on the banks of the Rhone River) offered….take a barge, munch lunch on board, visit the Camargue and return that evening….one of many gorgeous days out! Take the local train to Marseille and visit the old Port area for a delicious bouillabaisse; take the train to L’Isle sur la Sorgue and indulge in their 300+ antique shops and markets…..

Suffice to say, should you choose not to have a car and tackle the perhaps “wrong side of the road”, you can base yourselves in Avignon and not be restricted in where you travel….the world is still your “oyster”!

The apartment rents on a weekly basis from 12noon on Friday to 10am the following Friday.

During the low season, long let prices are negotiable.

Pets are not permitted in the apartment.
